چکیده

This article discusses two methods for modeling eutectic solidifi cation using the phase-field approach. First, a multi-phase-fi eld model is used to study the three-dimensional morphological evolution of binary eutectics. Performing the calculations in three dimensions allows observation of both lamellar and rod-like structures as well as transient phenomena such as lamellar fault motion, rod-branching, and nucleation or elimination of phases as solidifi cation progresses. The second approach models multiple eutectic grains where the crystallizing phases have an orientation relationship. This approach is promising for modeling complex solidification microstructures.

Directional solidification of metal-gas eutectic and fabrication of regular porous metals

Directional solidification of metal-gas eutectic (Gasar) is a novel process for making regular porous metals. This process is based on a solid-gas eutectic reaction involving a gaseous medium and a metal or a ceramic phase, and allows an easy control of the porosity, such as its pore size, pore orientation and morphology in a wide range by properly adjusting its melting and solidification condi...

Amplitude expansion of the binary phase-field-crystal model.

Amplitude representations of a binary phase-field-crystal model are developed for a two-dimensional triangular lattice and three-dimensional bcc and fcc crystal structures. The relationship between these amplitude equations and the standard phase-field models for binary-alloy solidification with elasticity are derived, providing an explicit connection between phase-field-crystal and phase-field...

Three-dimensional Phase-field Simulations of Eutectic Solidification and Comparison to in Situ Experimental Observations

The phase-field method has become the method of choice for simulating microstructure formation during solidification. Recent progress, both on the formulation of the model and on the numerical implementation, makes it now possible to simulate quantitatively the evolution of complex microstructures in three dimensions. This is illustrated by simulations of eutectic coupled growth. The morphologi...

Phase-field Modeling of Eutectic Solidification: From Oscillations to Invasion

We develop a phase-field model of eutectic growth that uses three phase fields, admits strictly binary interfaces as stable solutions, and has a smooth free energy functional. We use this model to simulate oscillatory limit cycles in two-dimensional lamellar growth, and find a continuous evolution from lowamplitude oscillations to successive invasions of one solid phase by the other when the la...

Computer Simulation of Equidxed Eutectic Solidifiction of Metals

In the present work, the solidification process was simulated in both macroscopic and microscopic scales. Two-dimensional heat transfer equation for conduction was applied for macroscopic modeling using enthalpy formulation and finite element method. In order to decrease execution time and/or memory capacity in finite analysis, skyline mathematical technique was adapted. The microenthalpy metho...
